COLORGUARD / MAJORETTES / DRUM MAJOR INFO
(updated 10/15/16)
Colorguard
The colorguard is a marching unit comprised of a flag (and other props) line which is chosen by audition each spring by a qualified panel of adjudicators. Color guard captain(s) will be chosen during auditions. Membership shall be open to all EHS students grades 9-12 who meet the academic/disciplinary eligibility requirements as set forth by the Eufaula City Schools Board of Education. Members must be enrolled in band class for the Fall Semester. Additionally, any student chosen for guard shall assume the financial obligations for her uniform, summer camp fees which includes tuition, meals and transportation, and other misc. items. This unit requires extra rehearsal time in the summer. An audition fee of $10.00 is required.
Eufaula High School Colorguard Tryout Information
Tryouts are conducted during the Spring Semester after school. These tryouts will test individual and group ability to perform with sharpness and correctness. Candidates will learn basic spinning technique (such as drop spins, speed spins, tosses, etc.) There will be a group routine that will be performed before the judges. Also, overall poise, posture, energy, and attitude will be taken into consideration. Each member must make at least 80% on the tryout to be considered. There will be a maximum of 18 members on the line (16 + 2 alternates.) Last year's captains will teach these techniques, and routines for the audition. Practices will be at the EHS Band Room and you need to have comfortable clothes & tightly-laced tennis shoes. You will be outside, so dress appropriately. We will practice every Tuesday & Thursday starting February 25 from 4:00-5:00. We will practice every day the week of tryouts (March 17-21.) Basics fundamentals will be taught Feb 25, 27, March 4, 6, & 10. Routines will be taught after that.
Important things to remember about tryouts.
You will need to have a “uniform” for auditions. The tryout uniform will be a white t-shirt, black shorts, and tennis shoes, or other uniform decided by the captains and approved by the band director. Please don’t wear flashy jewelry that will distract the judges (only studded earrings will be allowed due to safety… you don’t want to accidentally snatch a hoop ring out of your ear during practice!) Remember, this is a group of people, not a bunch of individuals.
Academic requirements are the same as the athletic expectations.
I will also be checking discipline records with the office. Anyone with more than 3 days of ISS, or any OSS cannot tryout or attend practices.
You may not try out if you have any outstanding fees for EHS or AMMS.
Rookies must have 2 teacher recommendations; Vets must have 1 teacher recommendation.
The captain(s) will be chosen from a separate audition between any/all current members and will consist of one individual flag routine lasting between 45 – 60 seconds, and an interview. Captain tryouts are immediately following line auditions.
Results will be taped to the band room door by 9:00 pm that night, and will also be posted on the band’s facebook page at www.facebook.com/eufaulaband
Important things to remember if you make the line.
The uniform will cost about $200 depending on the selection by the captain(s), and approved by the director. We will probably use the same uniform as last year, so only new members will have to purchase a uniform.
Shoes will cost around $30 depending on the style.
A matching wind suit (pants and monogrammed jacket) for cold games costs around $70. We will be getting a new wind suit this year.
Poms for the stands cost about $25.
Crop tops (part of the uniform) is about $30 for new members.
All new members & captains are required to attend a rookie camp at the band room June 16-18 from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm. If you have a conflict with any of these dates, let me know ASAP, and we can make a change.
All members are required to attend the full colorguard camp in July. We will hire an instructor to come teach the halftime show routines, which will cost $30 per member. That will be July 21-23 at EHS and is required.
There is a $55 EHS band camp fee that will be due during band camp (July 28 – August 1), and a $10 band t-shirt must be purchased. There may be additional colorguard pep rally/tshirt fees.
Anyone that is selected as a member must have the uniform paid for (or $100 deposit for vets) by May 1 or they may be cut from the line. Uniforms, windsuits, etc. must be preordered and planned by then in order to get them back by football season (they take 3 months.) We will have a fundraiser in April, and a few this summer as well. We will size for uniforms at a date set later.
All members must sign up for the Fall Semester “Band” class.
All members must attend all practices, football games, pep rallies, parades, competitions, and other marching band events.
ESTIMATED cost of participating in the EHS Band Colorguard
$200 + $30 + $70 + $25 + $30 + $30 + $55 + $10 = $450 (estimated)

Majorettes
The majorette line is a baton twirling (and other props) unit of girls chosen by audition each spring by a qualified panel of adjudicators. Majorette Captain will be chosen during these auditions. Membership is open to any marching band member with at least 1 year of marching experience on an instrument and who have met the academic/disciplinary eligibility requirements as set forth by the Eufaula City Schools Board of Education. Majorettes must be enrolled in band class both semesters. Because majorette uniforms are precisely fitted and almost impossible to alter, each majorette must assume the financial obligation of her uniform ($150 - $200). Uniforms will be approved by the director and sponsor. Additionally, any student chosen for majorette shall assume the financial obligations for her uniform, summer camp fees which includes tuition, meals and transportation, and other misc. items.
Tryouts are conducted during the Spring Semester after school. These tryouts will test individual and group ability to perform with sharpness and correctness. Candidates will be judged on basic twirling technique (such as thumb flips, finger twirls, series’, tosses, etc.) There will be a group routine that will be performed before a panel judges. Also, overall poise, posture, energy, participation, and attitude will be taken into consideration (both from the tryout, and practices leading up to the tryout.)
Important things to remember about tryouts
Academic requirements will be the same as the athletic requirements.
Majorettes must have marched in the Eufaula Band a minimum of one (1) year on their perspective instrument, and be currently enrolled in the EHS band class and both semesters for next year. The line will be based on a ratio of total wind players of the previous year’s marching band (1 majorette per 12 wind players.) All members must meet the minimum audition score of 80% (82.4 points out of 103 possible points.)
You will need to have a “uniform” for auditions. The tryout uniform will be this year’s band t-shirt, soffe shorts, white socks, and tennis shoes (or other appropriate “uniform” as chosen by candidates and approved by the band director.) Hair must be pulled back, and away from your face. Please don’t wear ribbons in your hair, bright makeup, or flashy jewelry that will distract the judges. Remember, this is a uniformed team, not individuals.
You also need two batons for the audition process. Most music stores carry batons (Art’s Music in Dothan and Montgomery [1-800-341-2787] should have them.) Be sure to talk to the clerk about getting the right size if you’re purchasing them. You’ll need “starline venus” batons.
The majorette captain will be chosen from a separate audition between any/all current majorettes and will consist of one individual routine lasting between 45 – 60 seconds, and an interview. Captain tryouts are immediately following line auditions.
Tryouts are closed to everyone but the judges, band director, candidates, or other appropriate Eufaula City Schools faculty/staff.
Judges will be qualified & highly experienced. They will be unbiased, outside sources, having no contact with the candidates previously if at all possible.
Results sheets may be looked at by the candidates following the posting of the results, but may not leave the office of the band director.
Location will be the EHS Band Room.
Results will be posted on the outside band room door by 8:30 pm the evening of tryouts, and also be posted on the band’s facebook page. www.facebook.com/eufaulaband
Costs

Members pay for an outside clinician to come here for 3-4 days in the summer, which is estimated at $50-$100 per majorette, depending on the length of the camp. All new members & captain must attend the rookie camp with the colorguard to learn the pom routines for our stands music, and continue learning basic technique. That is June 16-18 from 1:00-4:00 pm.
